Quick Tip!

Dr. Pepper is the sweet nectar of heaven.

You will never convince me otherwise.

It is my Kryptonite.

I have been trying to lose weight and make healthier choices and Dr. Pepper gets me every time! Although I haven't fully given it up, I am cutting back.  When I do have it, I want it cold, served over ice (in a non-sweat cup, to be exact).  I don't want it straight from the bottle or can...even if it's cold.  It has to be cold, then poured over ice.  Yes, I know.  I am very particular.

So what do you do when you just bought it and the can is hot?  I have the solution!  Check out this quick video.  It's amazing!

Happy Friday!

5 Tips for De-cluttering the Kitchen

I don't know about you, but I have a frequent visitor at my house that I not-so-lovingly call "The Clutter Monster".  He shows up more often than I'd like and stays way too long.  He comes out late at night, when I'm asleep and leaves piles and messes everywhere.  We've never actually seen him, but I know he's there...

We moved to a new house a little over a year ago.  The home we lived in previously was awful.  We lived there way too long because we are in debt and the rent was very cheap.  We kept saying that we'd move next year, then we never did.  Last February, we were told our landlord had sold the property and we had 4 weeks to move.  Cue panic mode!!!

We moved into a duplex and we love it here.  It's not huge.  It's not fancy.  But it's just right for the two of us.  We have a garage, I have a craft room and we love the neighborhood.  These are all things we never had before.

I say all that to say that since we've moved, I have really worked on making our house look nice.  At the old house, I cleaned (until the year I got meningitis!), but it never looked clean because it was just old and ugly.  It became such a chore because I just hated the way it looked.  Here, it actually looks clean and shiny when I dust or sweep, so I actually enjoy it.

I believe dirt and clutter are two different things.  You can dust, vacuum or scrub all day, but if you have clutter strewn about, your house won't look clean.  Clutter sneaks in a little at a time for most people, until you have a pile of miscellaneous crap and don't know exactly how it got that way.  I think the kitchen is the worst place in the house at accumulating clutter.  Mail, small appliances, vitamins/medications, cups, dishtowels and much more seem to like living on the counters.

Here are a few ways I've discovered that help me keep my kitchen looking tidy, even if I haven't just cleaned...

1. Keep your counter tops clear of unnecessary items.
For a long time, we had a coffee maker on our kitchen counter.  I NEVER use a coffee maker; my husband used it maybe once every 3 weeks or so.  Every time I cleaned, I would have to move it to clean behind and dust it because it wasn't used enough.  I finally took it off the counter.  It's in an easy to reach place, but not out where it takes up counter space or has to be cleaned all the time.

If you make coffee every morning, it makes sense to have a coffee maker on your counter.  But a food processor? A waffle iron?  Unless you use these items frequently, put them away.  I promise, you'll love it!

2. Have a place for EVERYTHING.
One of the biggest reasons for clutter is that some things don't have a "home" and we end up laying them down on any horizontal surface that's close.  This is especially true for circulars, mail and paperwork.  If you can, sort your mail over a trash can and immediately discard anything you don't need.  Then, head to a shredder if any of it needs destroyed.  After that, immediately take the items that need action to their home.  If you don't have a spot for mail, go make one right now!  I normally pay bills at work on my lunch hour, so I put the mail straight in my work bag and handle it later.  If you save coupons or sales flyers for later shopping, you could buy a wall organizer or place a cute basket somewhere and stash them there.  Whatever you do, don't start a stack.  Stacks become piles, and piles are what you find in pastures when the cows digest their food!

The same goes for kitchen items.  Make sure you have a spot for everything, so when you're putting things away, it's a quick and painless process.   If you don't have enough cabinet or drawer space in your kitchen, try storing larger items in another room, a closet or even the garage.  My mom has shelving in the garage for things like crock pots, her large roaster and cake plates that she doesn't use often.  If you store them in their box or clear plastic bags, you don't have to worry about dust or dirt accumulating.

3. Reduce, Reduce, Reduce!
If you're like me, you have, at one time or another, bought that adorable pink spatula because it's so cute and you just can't live without it,  Once you start using it, it's crummy and you never use it again, but can't part with it because you paid good money for it.  Honey, you gotta let go!

This has been a hard one for me.  I love kitchen gadgets and have bought many in my time.  However, some of them have turned out to be junk (Anyone remember Eggies from TV?  Yep, I bought 'em.  And they were awful.).  No matter how much you paid for something or how much you love it, if it serves no purpose, get rid of it.  Your time and peace of mind is much more important than that stinking pink spatula.

Go through every drawer and cabinet and remove every item you never use and toss, sell or donate it.  Then, take out the items that you only use a couple of times per year and find them a new home.  This will help free up the prime real estate in your kitchen and make clean up and organization easier.  If it's easy to put things away, you'll be much more likely to do it on a regular basis.

4. Pick up after yourself.
Sounds simple enough, right?  Not quite.  Unless you were born Martha Stewart (love her!), it doesn't come naturally to have an immaculately clean house at all times.  I can be a real slob.  I won't allow plates with rotting food or gross trash to lie around, but I sure will pile up my shoes by the door or leave my towels in the bathroom floor.  It's much easier than actually picking up after myself.  BUT...someday, I eventually have to pick it up anyway.  If you get into the habit of always putting things back where they go, your house will be much more peaceful and tidy.

Earlier today, I went to return a cup to the kitchen from this morning.  Instead of putting it straight into the dishwasher, I caught myself sitting it on the counter closest to the door.  Then, I realized what I was doing.  I actually counted, and it took me about 4 extra steps and maybe 10 extra seconds to put it away.  If it were that easy, why didn't I put it away?  I was being lazy, plain and simple.

Purpose in your mind to start a habit of putting away everything you touch.  It may take a few weeks for it to become second nature, but it will.  Just stick with it.

5. Have a nightly routine.
After a long day at work, going to the gym, maybe doing some laundry, then cooking dinner, I have no desire to clean my kitchen.  I want to leave everything where it is, plop down on my couch and have some quality time with my DVR.  What will happen if I do this?  The next day, I'll have a sink full of dishes, junk on the counters and we'll end up having Taco Bell for dinner...again.  And then I have overspent my budget, broken my diet and had bad food.

A clean kitchen provides a welcoming environment for food prep and cooking.  I am a poster child for this.  Often in the past, I have left the dishes for the next day, then don't want to do them, so we end up grabbing something cheap, quick and unhealthy.  This has done nothing but make us fatter and shrink our bank account.  When I started working really hard on a nightly routine, cooking became less of a chore.  Cleaning became faster and easier.  And...I actually stuck to my meal plan and lost weight!  Imagine that...

Even if your routine just consists of one or two things, once you start, you won't regret it.  Trust me!

I am by no means an expert on these things, but I wanted to share what has worked for me.

How do you keep your kitchen de-cluttered?

Fab Flower Tutorial

It's early morning.  I don't really hate Mondays, I just hate the alarm clock on Mondays.  Don't you?  Waking up to an alarm is so harsh...

Anyway, I wanted to share a fabulous tutorial I found while lurking on Pinterest last week.  Kay from Kays Kreative Korner shows how to make these great flowers using vellum and ink....

Isn't it pretty?  You can find the tutorial HERE.  I have this on my to do list.  You all know how I love making flowers....

Quick Tip

As I mentioned in my last post, I had a garage sale this weekend with my mom and best friend.  I made a good amount of money, so I'm happy with that, but I'm glad it's over.  My mom loves having garage sales - I do not!  I like making money on my junk.... but I hate messing with it!

Anyway, I sat down to work on my lesson for church tomorrow and went to Pinterest to look for something.  Then, I got sidetracked and found this.

Amy, from Scrap This, Save That, shared a great idea for scrap storage.  I love buying paper stacks because you can get so many coordinating prints and patterns, but I always have a problem with the scraps from the stacks.  I prefer to keep my scraps with the stack of paper so I'll have them next time I need them, but they fall out of the books when I slide them in my cabinet.

Amy suggests attaching an envelope to the back of each stack for storing your scraps.  Isn't that genius?  I guess it's the blond hair, but I never would have thought of that!  I am totally impressed.  She mentions in her post that she got the envelopes at the dollar store, so you know where I'm headed.  I can't wait to to this.

I just wanted to share this with you guys.  Have a great Saturday!

Blessings,
Cheryl

I {heart} Dawn McVey!

Happy Thursday!  This Thursday is particularly happy because it's the day before Friday, which is the day before a four day weekend for me.  Woohoo!  My hubby had to use some vacation time so we are both off together - which almost never happens.  He works nights and weekends and goes to school in the evenings and I work days and am off on the weekends, so we sometimes only see each other for about 30 minutes a day.  We have no big plans for our days off, but I'm sure we'll enjoy sleeping in and being L-A-Z-Y!

I was catching up on my blog reading (My Google Reader account had 1000+ posts to read!) and I came across this great video from Dawn McVey on the Papertrey Ink blog.  I have never purchased anything from them, but I frequently drool over their products and her talent.  Someday, I will actually buy some stuff, I'm sure.

Dawn is amazing and I am continuously in awe of her creations.  This video gives some great ideas for packaging over sized and/or embellished cards.  I run into this problem quite frequently, so this was helpful to me!  Check out the video below and the post HERE.

My favorite idea is the glassine bag.  After watching, I decided I needed to order some and I found them on Amazon really cheap.  You can get 100 for $9.95!  I think this is a fabulous idea in place of an envelope and I can't wait to use them.

Be sure to check in tomorrow for Font Friday!

Cheryl

I missed you guys!

Howdy everyone!  I just wanted to stop in and say hello...  It feels like I haven't posted anything in forever, when in reality it's only been a little over a week.  I missed you guys!

We have had a modem tragedy at my house and have no Internet access until another one comes in the mail - hopefully by Friday (or so I'm told) - so I won't be able to post any projects until them.  I'm at work now and thought I would at least share something with you today.

My friend sent me a great link from someone who makes their own glue dots.  I don't know about you, but I go through tons of those little babies and they can become pricey.  I have yet to try this, but I have this glue on my list for next time I'm at the craft store.  I'd love to know if you any of try it or have tried it.  You can see this great idea at Crafts by CJ.  I can't wait to try it.  I'm hoping I can make some when I'm off work for the holidays.  When I do, I will share my results with you all.

I hope to be back with more projects as soon as my Internet connection is up and running again at home.

Blessings,
Cheryl

Magic Eraser = Fabulous

Last week, I posted a few quick tips I'd found on Pinterest; one of them being to use a Magic Eraser to clean your Cricut mat.  I mentioned I would try it this weekend and I did!

Ewww!!  Here's my nasty mat before I started.  I have had this mat for over a year now and I continue to re-stick it using a glue stick.  Normally, I wipe my mats down with a baby wipe after I'm done using them for the day.  And it still looks this icky!

I got out my trusty Magic Eraser and started scrubbing.  I began to notice the mat started to look cleaner as I went, but the adhesive began roll off the mat.  It was quite a mess for a bit.  I worked in sections, so I would scrub for a while, then wipe all the pieces of goo off with a baby wipe, then scrub some more.

After a few minutes, I decided to use my brain and began scraping off the goo with my handy dandy Cricut tool.  This was much better than wiping with a baby wipe or paper towel.  I decided the best method is to scrub an entire section, then scrape off the goo.

(Please disregard my lovely chipped nail polish on my middle finger!  The glue I used earlier in the day decided to take some polish with it when I wiped it off!)

As you can see here, I've done all but one section.  What a difference!

Here's a side by side comparison of the same spot on the mat, before and after cleaning.  Wowza!  I love it!

After this I got all excited and took the Magic Eraser to my Martha Stewart Scoring Board, my pink, self healing mat and anything else on my desk that had a mark on it!

Overall, I think this is a great item to use on your mat.  Once I was done, the mat was super sticky again and I didn't even have to use the glue stick.  It probably took me 15-20 minutes total.  Of course, that includes me stopping every couple of minutes to show my hubby the goo and the clean sections of the mat as I went.  He was not as thrilled as I.  He just doesn't understand the joy of a clean Cricut mat.

I'd love to know if you try this and if you love or hate it.

Have a blessed day!

A Quick Hello...

Happy Thursday!  I hope you all are doing well today.  I just wanted to stop in to say hello...  It seems I haven't posted in a while.  I have made several cards this week - and kept my promise to not use flowers on them.  Can you believe it?  I've made 3, so I only have 2 to go before I can flower away again!  Anywho, I sadly, don't have a project to share with you today.  I have 3-4 cards to post and I filmed 2 videos this weekend.  Our desktop computer got a virus and has crashed and the battery/cord on my laptop has been acting up, so I haven't been able to edit the pictures or videos yet.  I think my hubby figured out the laptop problem this morning, so I hope to be able to get those ready to go in a few days.  Until then, I thought I'd share a few tips with you.

Tip #1 - The Magic Eraser!
I have mentioned before that I re-use my mats over and over and over and over.  I am way too cheap frugal  to be buying new mats every few months.  I have been using the same 3 mats for over a year.  I re-stick mine using the Scotch Repositionable Glue Stick.  I think it's fabulous.

The only downside to re-sticking your mats is that they get pretty dirty and gunky looking.  I have tried scraping the mat off using a credit card, a spatula, a ruler, you name it.  It works ok, but is pretty time consuming and honestly is a pain in the you know what!  I actually just found this tip this morning, so I haven't tried it yet, but Fantabulous Cricut says to clean your mat prior to re-sticking using...

The Magic Eraser!  Who knew that would work?  I didn't.  I never even thought of it.  I am going to try it this weekend.  I'm ready for my mats to look pretty and clean again.

Tip #2 - Add a shim!
This is a brilliant idea and I wish I'd come across it sooner.  This come from Joy at Obsessed with Scrapbooking.  She says when you're cutting thick cardstock (like Bazzill or Stampin Up), you should add a shim (a piece of paper) under your mat when you load it into the Cricut.  This will lift your mat just slightly and the blade will cut a little deeper and insure that it cuts all the way through.  Genius, huh?

That's enough for today.  I wouldn't want to overload you with too much great information at once!  I will see you all back here tomorrow for Font Friday, then hopefully this weekend I'll get some of my projects posted.

Have a blessed day,
Cheryl

Quick Tip

I have a really quick tip to share with you all today.  This past weekend, I made all those little Back To School treat boxes for my kids at church.  Each one had an itty, bitty apple on it.  You can see them HERE, in case you missed that post.

I have found when cutting a shape (especially small ones) that has multiple layers, it's very helpful to leave the base cut on the mat while you adhere the layers.  This is very helpful if you have many to assemble, like I did with the apples.

When I cut the apples, there was a base layer in green (leaves), a red layer (apple) and a brown layer (stem).  I cut all of these on one mat.  I then removed the extra paper and left the cuts on the mat.

As you can see in the photo above, I just started gluing the layers on with the cuts directly on the mat.  This is a lifesaver if you have multiples with tiny pieces.  There's nothing more annoying than losing a small piece to your cut and having to cut it again.  I then added the brown stems, let them sit on the mat for a few minutes to dry, then they were ready to go.  Easy peasy!

I hope this tip helps make your life easier.  Have a blessed day!

Quick Tip - Embossing Brads

Happy Thursday Everyone!  It's been almost a week since I've posted.  I have  no excuse except I just lost track of time and all of a sudden it's Thursday!  I have a couple of cards that I just need to photograph and I'll be ready to share with you.

I was browsing Pinterest and came upon a fascinating tip that I wanted to share with you.

Source
On her blog HERE, Deena gives a great tip on how to use embossing powder on brads to change the color or add glitter.  How cool is that???  I love it.  I have a ton of brads that I bought in a big variety pack and some of the colors I will never use.  Now, I can change the color.

Basically, she says to heat up the brad with your embossing gun, then dip it in embossing powder.  Apparently the heat of the metal brad will melt the powder to it, then you just let it cool.  Voila!

I promise to have more cards and projects to share with you soon!  I finally got my desk cleaned out and back to normal and actually filmed a video.  I need to edit it and it will be ready to go too!

Blessings,
Cheryl

Clouds!

Ok, so I kinda have this weird obsession with clouds, but only when I'm singing.  (I told you it was weird).  I love to sing and am on the worship team at my church.  A long time ago, I was listening to some worship music on YouTube and came across a song which quickly became one of my favorites.  (Here's a link if you're interested in listening: Here In Your Presence)  In one of the videos of this song, there was a big screen in the background with these beautiful clouds floating by.  I just thought that was fabulous and ever since I've been convinced that I need some clouds to make me sing better!  I am not sure why I thought it was so pretty, but it just looked so peaceful and beautiful and I really liked it.  I keep trying to tell the folks at church that they should invest in a huge, expensive screen so I can have clouds billowing while I sing.  It hasn't worked.  Yet.

Tips for making envelopes

Good morning!  I hope you're having a great day so far!

I've had this list for a while and thought I'd share it with you.  One of the best purchases I've ever made for paper crafting is the Martha Stewart Scoreboard.  It's come in really handy and I love that you can make envelopes with it.  The only problem is that the info on the envelope tool only shows sizes for a few envelopes.  Lately, I've been really into making square cards (no idea why!) and need envelopes for them.  I came across a piece of paper I'd printed with sizes for making envelopes that aren't printed on the MS envelope tool.  Here are the recipes:

For a 3x3 card:
Start with paper size 5.5" x 5.5"
Score all sides at 2.5" using the envelope template

For a 4x4 card:
Start with paper size 6.5" x 6.5"
Score all sides at 2.5"

For a 5x5 card:
Start with paper size 8.5" x 8.5"
Score all sides at 3 3/8"

Hopefully this will hope those of you in need of square envelopes.  If you don't have the MS scoreboard, I would highly recommend it. I bought mine at Michael's, but you can get a great deal on Amazon here:

I'm off to busy myself with crafting.  Have a wonderful day!

Blessings,
Cheryl

Scraps!!!

I'm sure there's not a self respecting paper crafter out there that doesn't love scraps.  Big ones.  Little ones.  Skinny ones.  You name it - we love it!  One of the biggest pains in my craft area is my scrap storage, so I'm turning to you wonderful people for help!  For about a year or so now, I've stored my solid colored scraps in an accordion file, similar to this one:

The problem is small scraps fall to the bottom and are hard to find.  Also, patterned paper is a whole other problem.  I have those all in a drawer and they're a mess.  I've found some ideas online that look interesting and I want to share them with you.

Isn't this scrap box cute?  Patter at Triple the Scraps blog embellished this storage box that houses hanging folders.  I think it's adorable.  This could be nice and portable.

On the Paper Crafts Connection blog, she's shown a great way to store scraps.  I love the idea of making little file folders!  They're just precious!  And, of course, the pink bins are delicious!

I like both of these ideas, and I can see some pros and cons to both.  Now....I'd love your input.  How do you store scraps - both solid and patterned paper?  Remember - I craft in a tiny corner of my living room, so I have very limited space.  There are tons of ideas out there, but not many will fit in my space!  Thanks for your help with this matter!

Blessings,
Cheryl
